By virtue of a 3-1 win over 11th ranked Scecina, the girls soccer team (14-2) will host Covenant Christian Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the IHSAA sectional championship match. Covenant defeated Greenwood Christian on penalty kicks to advance to face the Sparkplugs.
In the win over Scecina, senior Sydney Rendes opened the scoring for the Sparkplugs who took a 1-0 lead into the intermission. Scecina scored early in the second half to tie the score but junior Jordan Davis and freshman Shelby Rendes tallied goals and the Sparkplug defense was solid, giving Speedway a win over one of the two teams that defeated the Plugs this year.
A Speedway win on Saturday would earn the Sparkplug girls a berth in the Park Tudor regional where the top ranked Panthers await them. Park Tudor was the other team to defeat Speedway, knocking off the Plugs in the County quarterfinals last week. The winners of the Cascade and Knightstown sectionals will face off in the other regional opening game.
