Sparkplugs News · Volleyball, Football teams learn tournament draws

The defending 3A volleyball sectional champs will participate in the Cardinal Ritter sectional beginning on October 15th.

The Sparkplugs are scheduled to play Indianapolis Washington at 7 p.m. next Thursday.  Cardinal Ritter drew one of two byes and will face the winner of the Beech Grove/Indian Creek match at 11 am next Saturday  while the winner of the Speedway match will face Herron in the other semifinal match that will not start on Saturday before noon.

The championship match will take place at 7 p.m. next Saturday and could potentially be a rematch of last year’s sectional final where Speedway won its first ever 3A sectional.   The Sparkplugs are in their second year of competition in the Class 3A tournaments in volleyball, girls basketball and boys basketball.

The football Sparkplugs who face Lutheran tonight in their final regular season home game learned their tournament fate Thursday night.   Their first round sectional opponent will be a somewhat familiar one.   Western Boone has been Speedway’s preseason scrimmage foe each of the last two seasons and the Stars will travel to Speedway for an opening round sectional game on October 23rd.

Both teams are 4-3 entering play this week and both teams have faced one common opponent:  Tri-West.   And both teams lost to the 3A Bruins.   With an opening round win, the Sparkplugs would host the winner of the Southmont/North Putnam game.   Both teams are under .500 this season giving the winner of the WEBO/Speedway game an excellent chance of advancing to the sectional championship round.   Cascade, Monrovia, South Vermillion, and Seeger round out the bottom bracket of the sectional field.
