Sparkplugs News · Sparkplug female winter athletes ready for sectional challenges

It’s girls sectional week for both the swimmers and the basketball players.

Thursday night, the ICC champions in girls swimming travel to Brownsburg to compete in a twelve team sectional.  Last season, the girls finished fifth and this year, the girls are optimistic about improving their team result.   Junior Kristin Pagach and Emma Allison are currently two school record holders that are shooting to break their records while junior Gabby Lopez continues to enjoy a solid season and is also in the hunt for a record or two.  The Lady Sharkplugs will compete in the prelims on Thursday beginning at 5:30 with the finals slated to begin at 1 pm on Saturday.

The varsity girls basketball team drew a bye in the opening round of Sectional 28, contested here at the Morris Pollard Gymnasium.   The girls finished the regular season at 15-3 and 5-2 in ICC play, earning them second in the conference standings.   The girls will open the semifinal round of the tournament Friday night at 6 pm against  Indian Creek (15-6).  The Lady Braves defeated Cardinal Ritter, 48-34 in the sectional opener Tuesday night.   Indian Creek is a member of the Western Indiana Conference where they finished in a tie for second place.

The winner of the Speedway/Indian Creek contest will be highly favored entering Saturday night’s contest against Beech Grove (3-18) or Herron (6-13).   Herron defeated Washington in Tuesday’s other quarterfinal matchup.
