Speedway entered Saturday’s Brownsburg Sectional meet with guarded optimism. Thursday night’s prelim opening performances were very mixed and the competition field was stiff. Saturday’s results proved to be very positive as the Sparkplugs took fifth place. Not only was this an improvement on last year’s finish, the Sparkplugs finished ahead of Tri-West, Decatur Central, and Ben Davis, all teams that had defeated the Sparkplugs earlier in the season.
Speedway’s 200 medley relay team of sophomore Kristin Pagach, junior Emma Allison, sophomore Gabby Lopez and sophomore Alexandria Hutchek started off the final round with a solid fifth place finish, posting a time of 2:05.04. Pagach came back in the 50 free finals to finish sixth with a 26.2.
The 200 free relay team of Lopez, Hutchek, Allison, and Pagach shaved nearly eight tenths of a second off of their Thursday night prelim team to finish fourth at 1.54.00. Pagach continued her strong series of performances in the very next event, posting a solid 7th place finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1.06.91, just two tenths of a second out of sixth. Lopez followed with a seventh place finish in the 100 breaststroke to conclude the Sparkplug championship round events.
